English IThe English I course provides a foundational study of literary genres, such as: novels, short stories, memoirs, poetry, and literary nonfiction. Throughout the duration of this class, we will be exploring various texts, as well as working to improve your writing, vocabulary, and communication and researching skills. We will continue to uphold the North Carolina Common Core Curriculum and strive to achieve the outlined essential standards and objectives. It is my hope that upon completion of this course, you will be able to read, comprehend, and analyze various texts and genres, write a well-supported argument, have a firm understanding of both figurative language and literary devices, and cite textual evidence to support your reading interpretation. English I is the springboard for developing foundational skills in the English curricula and I anticipate that you, too, will see the limitless possibilities for both intellectual and personal growth that this course offers.
Overview of Literature CoveredStudents will practice close reading as they analyze short stories, poetry, the novel Lord of the Flies and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet . Additionally, students will utilize various informational texts for research and rhetorical purposes. Thus, students will focus on citing strong and thorough textual evidence for both what the text says explicitly as well as implicitly, determine theme and central idea and its progression throughout the text, and analyze the impact of language on tone and meaning.
